Your stories stay yours.
People tell Retold things they have never said out loud. We built it on the assumption that everything you share is private, and that you should be able to take it with you or erase it completely.
Encrypted with your own key. Your recordings, transcripts, stories, summaries, tags, photos, and book drafts are encrypted with a key that belongs to your account alone. That key is itself protected by Google Cloud's key management service, and every use of it is logged.
Who processes your words. To work, Retold sends what you say to two companies: Anthropic, whose Claude models write the reflections, summaries, and chapter drafts, and ElevenLabs, which turns speech into text and text into speech. Neither uses your content to train models. No one else receives it unless you choose to send it.
Sharing with family. Nothing is shared unless you choose it, one memory at a time. Family you share with can read that story and see its photos; your conversation with Retold and your recordings stay yours. If you leave a group, what you shared there is taken back, and if you delete your account, your shared memories can no longer be read by anyone.
Your voice. If you choose to, Retold can make a copy of your voice to narrate your own films. It only happens after you read a consent statement aloud, and only from your own recordings. ElevenLabs makes and holds the copy. Nobody else can use it, it is never used to speak as you anywhere else, and removing it in Settings, or deleting your account, deletes it at ElevenLabs too. Retold does not copy anyone else's voice, including a relative who has died.
Notifications. If you turn them on in the app, they only ever say that something is ready, like "Your film is ready to watch", and never what a memory is about.
Assistants you connect. You can connect an AI assistant, like Claude, to ask about your memories there. It can only read, it skips memories marked "Just for me" unless you allow them, and you can disconnect it at any time in Settings. What it reads is then handled under that assistant's own privacy terms.
No staff access. Our team cannot read your memories. If you ever need help with something specific, we would ask your permission first, and that access would be logged.
Take everything with you. You can export all of it at any time as plain markdown files with your photos and recordings.
Real deletion. Deleting your account destroys your key first. From that moment your content cannot be read anywhere, including in backups. Then the data itself is removed.
Not therapy. Retold listens and reflects. It does not diagnose or advise. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the US or Canada, call 116 123 in the UK or Ireland, or find a local line at findahelpline.com.
